I am at a meeting in Springfield with a presentation by Rick Lynch. Thought I would share my notes from his presentation.
*in early 70's 1/2 of population volunteered....now 28% volunteer.
*volunteering has gone to an HR model....Rick says it should be different...
*Implications:
-jobs volunteers want to do!
-jobs with an end point
-jobs without a lot of structure
-jobs the volunteer controls
-jobs the volunteer can grow from
-jobs that are fun (things people feel good about themselves)
-jobs that aren't 'jobs'
*Paradigm Shifts
volunteer mgmt TO partner engagement
the model of work TO the model of leisure
recruitment TO fostering relationships
retention TO serial involvement
placement TO consultant
managing TO leadership

The Role of the Leader (someone who influences others to follow):
*mission creation
*vision creation
*system creation
*motivation creation
*values creation
Creating a Mission....answer two questions:
1. What is the problem your org is trying to solve or the community need it is trying to meet?
2. Your mission is a statement of the solution to the problem.
Creating a Vision:
If we were going to go across the street and start a competing organization, what would we do differently over there than we do over here?
