United Way Day of Action Print E-mail
Volunteers

United Way of Decatur and Mid-Illinois, Hickory Point Bank & Trust and Caterpillar encourage Volunteerism.

Day of Action is a brand new United Way initiative that will mobilize volunteers to help local non-profit organizations during this time of budget cuts, delayed payments and staffing decreases.  The first ever Day of Action will be held on September 25, 2010 from 8am to 5pm.

This project will look to activate over 1000 volunteers on a single day, working on projects across the county.  In addition, we will encourage everyone in the community unable to attend that day to pledge volunteer hours for the upcoming year.  In all, we hope to get as many people as possible to pledge at least 4 hours of service to our community over the next year.

Volunteers will meet in Nelson Park at Pavillion #2 to pick up their project assignments, get a free tee shirt and eat a meal.  They will the head out to their assignments.  There are two shifts, 8am and 12pm.  Volunteers can choose one or the other, or pick up two projects and work both shifts!

United Way is also seeking opportunities for our volunteers!  Does your NPO need some maintenence work done, do you have some sorting, folding or another clerical project to be completed??  Do you have a group of kids that would love to have a visit from volunteers?  Please click on the link below to download a project proposal form!

For more information, visit www.uwdecatur.org and click on the Day of Action tab on the top of the page or call 422-8537.

Thank you!

Treasurers of All-Volunteer Organizations: Eight Key Responsibilities Print E-mail
Volunteers
Written by Kelsey Holsapple
Thursday, 15 July 2010

More than half of the nonprofits in the U.S. are estimated to be all-volunteer organizations.  Due to the fact that these organizations have an informal air about them, it is easy for finances to be treated in a casual way.  But when money matters are treated casually, it can become too easy for money to get lost or for some people to question how money has been spent.

The following are eight key accountability and transparency responsibilities treasurers should be most concerned with:

1.  Handle the money with high standards and set a tone of integrity
2.  Manage the filings
3.  Identify and manage risk
4.  Confirm contributions
5.  Track volunteer time
6.  Plan and evaluate with a budget
7.  Prepare timely financial reports
8.  Recruit the next treasurer

Striving for success during the recession can be daunting, but when you tap into the power of volunteering, everybody – the volunteers, nonprofits and the community – wins.

Nonprofits should know that volunteering is not just advantageous to them, but also to the volunteers themselves.  Here are some tips on how to recruit, manage and retain volunteers:

1.    Define the role
2.    Don’t waste your time on people who aren’t a good fit
3.    Get them motivated
4.    Be flexible
5.    Recognize their important contribution

Learn more about these tips in the full article, found here.

Illinois Volunteer Management Landscape Survey Print E-mail
Volunteers
Written by Scott K. Niermann
Friday, 30 October 2009
Do you manage volunteers? Does your organization utilize volunteers? If so, please take a few minutes to complete our Volunteer Management Landscape Survey. The results of this survey will be used to create base line data for volunteer management in Illinois.

http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB229M7H77XTT

We strongly encourage your participation and feedback if you represent an organization that utilizes volunteers and volunteer/National Service programming. If possible, we request one representative per volunteer program (a large organization may conceivably have mutiple programs) complete the survey, and that the person most closely associated with the volunteer program or who assumes primary responsibility for the program complete the survey (this may or may not be an Executive Director or CEO). Your response to this survey is completely anonymous and voluntary. Thank you for your time helping to improve and expand volunteerism in all its forms for our great state.

Keeping Volunteers Engaged Print E-mail
Volunteers

I like this blog entry that gives practical tips for keeping volunteers engaged:

http://www.smallerindiana.com/profiles/blogs/volunteers-down-amp-out

Here's the meat:

* Get them involved online first.
* Make it personal – Use causal language and talk to them directly.
* Give them something very specific to do – Don’t say you need general office help. nobody wants to file in their spare time…
* Illustrate to them how their assistance will make an impact in numbers. Volunteer hours are worth real $’s and time that supplement and sometimes replace staff.
* Retain them with constant communication – thank them, and thank them again.
* Ask for their feedback – and thank them for it.
